To
fully appreciate the uniqueness of this pocket watch you
first have to know that Ludington, Michigan was the home of
the Star Watch Case Company. After I acquired this Mint,
never before used case I inquired around town with the few
remaining watch case workers about the origins of this case.
It was something of a mystery because the case is clearly
intended for use for a Ball Pocket Watch, however the lever
cutout is made for a Waltham Vanguard and the case is not
marked Ball Model. This is the story, according to the
recollection of a former Star worker. I do not know how to
verify this as all of the companies are out of business or
have changed ownership, but here it is. Evidently Waltham
was attempting to sell Ball on offering a 23 jewel model
using the Vanguard, a few of these prototypes cases were made for
samples to provided to Ball but the Ball name could not be
put into the case because of trademark considerations, so
these cases just have the Star logo. For some reason, this
is about the time all of these companies were going broke,
the deal fell apart and Ball purchased most of these cases
to use for their 435C Swiss movement and the remainder were discarded
or destroyed. Needless to say I paid a small fortune for
this one.
If you purchase this watch you probably
have the only one in existence, I can't guarantee it but in
all my years in this business and living in the home town of
Star Watch Case I have never seen another like it, although
there must be some Ball Pocket Watches that have this case.
I believe they used some of these cases with their Swiss
movements and the Complete Guide To Watches list a 23 jewel
Ball Waltham, that must be a Vanguard, although I have never
seen one.

This
is a Waltham Vanguard 23 Jewel Pocket Watch housed in a beautiful
Gold Filled 25 year case.
The case is beautifully
engraved and without inscriptions, the Cartouche is just
waiting for your initials.
Serial Number 16028486
dates this watch to 1908. That's right this beauty is over
100 years old and is keeping perfect time. The movement was
just serviced.
I like these older
Vanguard because they have the beautiful gold damasking on
the movement, something the newer Vanguards are lacking
The heavy glass beveled
crystal is flawless and the dial is free of chips or
hairlines.
Lever set and pendent wind
this Vanguard has the lever at 1:15 rather than 11 as the
newer one do, and the lever setting mechanism is more sturdy
on these earlier models.

This
is a very nice Waltham Vanguard 23 jewel up up down wind
indicator pocket watch. The movement is nicely damasked and
adjusted to 5 positions.
The movement was just serviced and the
case cleaned and polished.
I am doing something with this watch that
I rarely if ever do and that is to offer a watch for sale
with cosmetic flaws that I would normally correct before
selling.
Before I describe the flaws, I want to emphasize
that the watch is running strong and keeping very accurate
time. This watch starts to run on one or two winding turns
of the crown it is so strong.
The case is a Waltham 10 K gold filled
case and both covers screw on and off properly, the bow is
firm and there is no brazing.
The crystal is new old stock beveled
glass.
The dial has a chip
repair by the bottom right of the wind indicator hand and
part of the regulator may have been trimmed intentionally
because if you look at the balance bridge with a loupe you
can see where it was rubbing against the top of the balance
bridge. This in no way affects the operation on the watch.
This was most likely done to allow for free movement of the
regulator.
